Preparing My Child For Summer Camp, Vol. 1

Posted by Jason Sebell on Oct 31, 2013 10:25:00 AM

Are you getting excited for this summer at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen?  We sure are!  We are so looking forward to spending the summer with our community – playing together, learning, growing, making lasting friendships, and especially getting to know our new campers!

Parents often reach out to us and say “I’m not sure how to prepare my child for summer camp.” We know that first-time campers and parents have all sorts of questions about what camp is going to be like, and how certain things work (like laundry and meal time and bunk cleanup and the bus ride up to Camp).  So we have put together these answers to some of the questions new campers and parents seem to wonder about in anticipation of each summer.  Throughout the year we’ll be posting them on our blog and sending then directly to our new families in packages, too! We hope that this information is helpful, and that it helps you feel better prepared, less anxious, and even more excited for the summer of 2014!

Preparing Your Child For The Future

Posted by Jason Sebell on Oct 30, 2013 11:45:00 PM

Just after our summer season ended this incredible piece appeared in the Huffington Post. It was written by Todd Kestin, LCSW and Life Skills Mentor, and it is an exceptionally thoughtful essay about the massive impact overnight camp can have on a child. In just over 1,000 words he articulates the many 21st century skills that he was able to develop during his time as both a camper and a counselor: independence, resilience, critical problem solving, leadership, and the ability to find greater meaning through helping others.

Summer Camp For 21st Century Skills

Posted by Jason Sebell on Oct 28, 2013 3:27:00 PM

Last Sunday I saw a fascinating piece on 60 Minutes about Jack Andraka. The video may be the best example of the importance of young people having 21st Century Skills that I've ever seen. Jack has recently become quite famous for accomplishing something that no one has ever been able to do: create an accurate test to catch pancreatic cancer in its earliest stages. What makes Jack’s story even more interesting is that he’s 15, and he began his work on this project at the age of 14.

Overnight Camp Events

Posted by Jason Sebell on Oct 24, 2013 3:45:00 PM

Our overnight Camp organizes a lot of great events both during the summer, and in the off-season. Even though our overnight campers hail from 16 states and many different countries we all go to great lengths to come together during the fall and winter months. Quite simply, our community of campers, staff and parents really likes spending time together. Since our season ended in August we’ve had a couple of great events, with many more on the horizon. If you'd like to see our calendar of winter events please click on the link below.

Cool New Changes At Camp

Posted by Jason Sebell on Oct 23, 2013 11:02:00 AM

There are many cool, exciting changes in the works at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen! In the Office Luke is working hard on developing a new CrossFit kids program. For those not familiar with it, CrossFit Kids is a program designed to help kids and teenagers develop a lifelong passion for exercise. CrossFit and CrossFit Kids are built on a philosophy of being ‘fit for life’. It incorporates a constant variation of functional movements that kids need to play: pulling, pushing, running, throwing, climbing, lifting and jumping! A CrossFit Kids workout can include anything and everything from bodyweight movements (pull ups, push ups etc) to gymnastics movements (handstands, backwards rolls) to Olympic weightlifting (clean and jerks, snatches) to something as random as flipping a tractor tire. But the coolest thing about CrossFit is that all of the movements can be scaled to any age or level of fitness and are instructed safely by qualified CrossFit Kids Trainers. To learn more about CrossFit we invite you to watch this video.
