A Fun, Relaxing Day At Our Brother-Sister Summer Camp In NH

A Fun, Relaxing Day At Our Brother-Sister Summer Camp In NH

Today was a nice, fun, relaxing morning at Camp. At morning Assembly, when our community gathers to discuss the upcoming events of the day, everyone was acting a little silly. Our Ropes Course counselors announced that today was "Silly Top" Wednesday. To demonstrate what they meant, they pretend to be on the cat walk at a fashion event, showing off their silly shirts and tops. Everyone giggled and cheered for them.

Our Very Happy Campers' Second Half of the Summer

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 29, 2014 4:07:00 AM

Our very happy campers' start the second half of the summer

I always love our Camps' Visiting Day. I get to see some of my favorite people! Yesterday we were thrilled to welcome about 1,400 parents, grandparents and siblings of our campers' for the day. As our families were getting into their cars for the trip home it rained for about 20 minutes, and then everyone went outside to play. And while many of our kids were a bit nervous about saying goodbye to their loved ones, within only minutes of the final departure everyone (and I really mean everyone) was back to having a great time. There was silliness in the Lodges and great times everywhere you looked. Our Big Brothers and Sisters came down to spend time with their little siblings, and both the Evergreen Path and the Kenwood Compound were filled with laughing, smiling faces. It was a great time to be at our summer camp in NH.

Visiting Day at Our Summer Camp In NH

Posted by Scott Brody on Jul 27, 2014 11:48:00 PM

An amazing visiting day at our summer camp in NH

The sun setting over our lake after a beautiful visiting day at our summer camp in NH

A Message from Scott

It is just after 10pm, and I’ve walked our campus end to end for the final time today. The evening air is beginning to chill slightly as the hours pass, and a gentle mist gathers in the low spots across our summer camp in NH. The stars are coming out, and inside our bunks your children and their counselors are drifting off to sleep, dreaming of the coming days and all that they will bring.

As always, the few tears that we saw as you drove away this afternoon quickly vanished. It took about 15 minutes for Camp to return to its pre-visiting day state, as the sound of play quickly filled our campus. Our Hut 6 & Juniper big brothers and sisters rushed in to join their adopted freshmen siblings, and in a few short minutes, their attention shifted from your departure to basking in the adoration of these engaging young leaders and future counselors.

As is our tradition, after another wonderful dinner served up by our beloved Chef, our younger boys and girls gathered in the tent and gym to lose themselves in a movie and in the company of good friends. The girls watched “Frozen”, and as if on cue, rose together in song for a rousing version of “Let It Go”. This song and the sentiment it represents have been recurring themes this summer. We are proud of who we are, and are striving to be our best selves. We take whatever comes our way and make the best of it. Some call it "acceptance". others "resilience", still others may call it “grit”; for your children at our Brother-Sister camp this summer, it is just how we “roll” as a camp community. As Jason would say, we are “very happy campers”.

When your children awake to Reveille tomorrow morning, the final three weeks of our summer camp in New Hampshire will begin. We save many of our most exciting events for the end of the summer; Hollowpallooza, Carnival, Color War, exciting canoe adventures and many more.

For those campers who left us today, though they will be missed by their bunkmates and counselors, they will all have the chance to experience these wonderful end of summer days when they return for the full seven week experience next summer.

For the rest of us, we are about to enter the time warp that is the final three weeks of Camp. These days will pass like a blur, but we will treasure each remaining moment. There is more learning to do, and the growth and maturity that you saw in your children today will continue to blossom in these final weeks of Camp.

All of your children are in bed, safe and sound, ready for the fun and adventure that tomorrow will bring. It was a wonderful Visiting Day, in which all of us went with the flow, and showed our ability to have fun under any and all circumstances. With a little help from our vigilant weather team, we made the most of this memorable day. I am grateful to all of you for sharing this day with us. I am even more grateful that you have chosen us as your partners, and have shared your wonderful children with us, if only for a few more short weeks.

Sleep well tonight! We’ll see you in three weeks!

With love and gratitude,

A Lovely Day For Our Very Happy Campers

Today was a really nice day at our summer camp in NH. The weather was really perfect. It was warm and sunny with very low humidity. It seemed to help put everyone in a really good mood. From the start of first period in the morning our campers threw themselves into activities. Kids waterskiied at every period, during rest period, and even free play. The slide and rock-it had people on them all day long, too.

A Great Summer Camp For A Child With Food Allergies

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 24, 2014 3:03:00 AM

We are a great summer camp for a child with food allergies!

We were very excited to see that our brother-sister summer camp in NH has yet again been recognized for providing a safe home for our campers with food allergies and intolerances. Yesterday afternoon, Staples.com wrote an article about the trend of summer camps providing a peanut and tree nut free environment. The word is clearly out about how happy we are to provide our community members with meals that meet their dietary needs, including gluten free, dairy free, egg/albumen free, and more! We are also honored to be one of the first camps listed on the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network's Safe Camp list.

Another Day Of Amazing Tournaments and Trips at Our Brother-Sister Summer Camp in NH

We had a lot of tournaments and trips going on today. Evergreen's Juniper girls were having fun up in Maine on a white water rafting trip. Just after breakfast Evergreen's Freshmen departed for their Pemi River Canoe trip. They fortunately have incredible weather tonight for their camping trip. With no clouds in the sky they appear to have a blanket of stars overhead. Evergreen's 11's, 13's and 15's tennis teams were also traveling today, as were Kenwood's 10's Tennis and 12's Basketball.

The End Of An Amazing Special Event For Our Very Happy Campers

Today was another great day of Big Weekend. Just after breakfast the 6 teams had rallies to work on their Songs and Formations. The coaches of each team were asked to write a parody song about their team and the others. Our eldest campers, who live in buildings called Hut 6 and Juniper, had the task of teaching these songs to the rest of their teams. It's part of their learning to be effective leaders in our community. After practicing their songs for a while the campers then began to work on their formations. Each team was tasked with telling a story about their mythological character by using their team members' bodies to form shapes, letters, and even animated characters. Some teams had their campers wear 3 and 4 layers of different colored t-shirts, removing them at strategic times to help tell their story. This was a truly collaborative project, and everyone on the team had the opportunity to give their input.

Another Amazing Special Event For Our Very Happy Campers

On this 4th Saturday of the summer Camp slept. Once reveille blew everyone was quickly out of the bunks, excited for the start of this amazing special event called Big Weekend. I loved seeing the creativity of our counselors, and how hard they work to make an event like this special for our kids. And I also loved how quickly our very happy campers campers threw themselves into this incredible weekend event.

Before breakfast the camp gathered for an assembly where Mia had the teams line up for the first time. Everyone was wearing the individual color t-shirt of their team (thank you to all parents who read this year's packing list and included the array that we had asked for!) and after a quick breakfast they moved out to the first activities of the day.

The End Of A Great Third Week At Our Summer Camp In NH

The End Of A Great Third Week At Our Summer Camp In NH

Today, our summer camp in NH said goodbye to a fabulous third week of the summer. Our very happy campers woke up to an absolutely beautiful New Hampshire morning. The weather was mild, and as the sun rose over the lake it quickly burned off a thin layer of fog. This was just around the time that 57 Evergreen campers and their counselors descended on the Evergreen waterfront for their second Polar Swim of the summer. With great glee they lined around the docks, did their jumping jacks, and with the support of Adventure Dave leapt into the brisk morning water.

Today just felt like a wonderfully mellow day. Our very happy campers seemed to enjoy their many activities, but I think that they enjoyed today's rest period even more. The temperature was just right in the cabins, and as I walked from building to building I saw something that surprised me. In both Kenwood and Evergreen there were campers of various ages in all of the bunks. Seniors were playing magic cards with their Inter friends, and Sophomores were playing ping pong with the Juniors. There was a dance party in Cedar lodge with Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors, and in front of Hemlock about 50 girls and counselors were lying on towels listening to music. It was wonderfully social, and the mixture of friends of different ages made me smile.

Very Happy Campers Exploring And Creating

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 16, 2014 4:39:00 AM

Today our very happy campers were exploring and creating at our summer camp in NH

Our busy, happy week continues! Just after breakfast the Evergreen Juniors departed for their hike up Mt. Major. Because of thunder concerns they did not sleep out tonight, but as you can see from the photo above they had an incredible time on this adventure, just loving being together. I feel like this picture highlights exactly what our summer camp community is all about. Many thanks to counselor Sarah Rossien for taking it!

The Juniors weren’t the only ones braving the outdoors today. Our Evergreen Sophomores also went on their own trek up Mt. Kearsarge.  In just over 1 hour and 45 minutes they made it to the top. Afterwards, they enjoyed a lunch with an incredible view of the forests of NH, picked some wild blueberries, and then headed back down for the return trip to Camp.

The Start Of Another Great Week At Our Summer Camp In NH

Today Was The Start Of Another Great Week At Our Summer Camp In NH

We began the 3rd week of this amazing summer with campers going in so many different directions. Kenwood’s Hut 6 (our oldest boys) left on their white water rafting trip in Maine. For the next two days they will be braving the class 4 & 5 rapids of the Dead River (home to some of the best rafting on the east coast). The Evergreen 15’s participated in a lacrosse tournament for the first time in our camps’ history. The girls were so proud to be pioneers in this sport that we have only begun to teach and play in the last few years. Our 9/11/13/15’s swim team was also out of Camp today for a big swim meet. As you can see in the picture above they had a phenomenal time!

Friday Night Traditions At Our Summer Camp In NH

The Friday Night Traditions At Our Summer Camp In NH

Camps Kenwood and Evergreen is a values-driven summer camp in NH. Our parents tell us regularly that one reason that they chose our summer camp community is because of our emphasis on character education. Over the course of each 7-week season we strive to teach our campers about the value of being an honest, hardworking, empathetic, socially conscious person. Our counselors serve as role models to their campers, actively reinforcing these values in the midst of bunk life, on our ball fields, and in the rest of daily camp life.

Another way that we do this is when we pause on Friday’s to discuss and reinforce our community’s shared values. As part of an inclusive community we offer two simultaneous gatherings: a historically Jewish Shabbat service, and a non-denominational, ecumenical service. About 90% of our campers come from Jewish homes. We feel that it’s important to offer a weekly Shabbat service for them while also offering a welcoming alternative to our non-Jewish friends. Campers are free to take part in either service, and most happily try out both over the course of each summer.

Welcoming New Friends To Our Summer Camp In NH

Welcoming new friends to our summer camp in NH

As always, we had a lot going on in and out of Camp today. Evergreen's Mt. Washington trip made it to the top of the mountain. The girls had spectacular weather, and loved the incredible view. Evergreen's dance team had a meet at another camp, and while it is still unclear to us how the judges were scoring the event, our girls were very pleased with how they performed. Kenwood's Inters and Juniors had a day at Weirs Beach. When I was with them they were playing football and frisbee in the sand, and enjoying a hot, sunny day in beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee. Evergreen's 11's, 13's and 15's took part in a massive tennis tournament, and many girls advanced to later rounds.

Just after breakfast Kenwood's 1st Year Seniors left on an excursion with Adventure Dave. They traveled to Rye Beach and learned how to paddle board on the ocean. Everyone got up on the boards and enjoyed the surf, and a great time was had by all!

The Huffington Post Says We Create Very Happy Campers

Our summer camp in NH is recognized for producing some very happy campers!

We were very excited to see our summer camp in NH mentioned in an article in today’s Huffington Post – and that it employed a title very similar to most of our blog posts this summer. Stephen Gray Wallace, Director at the Center for Adolescent Research and Education, outlined some of the key 21st century skills that children learn at summer camp, including:

Learning How To Collaborate At Our Summer Camp In NH

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 9, 2014 12:45:00 AM

At our summer camp in NH our campers are learning many life lessons, including how to dream big and collaborate with one another.

One of the best parts of being at a 7-week summer camp is that you have time to work on long-term projects. You can build something big and complicated in the woodshop, or practice with your rock band until it you capture the sound you are looking for. You can keep going back to the batting cage until you're connecting with the ball in just the right way, or finally get the nerve up to jump off of the zip line. You can try and fail and keep on trying until you accomplish your goal whatever it is. Today, a group of campers completed the first installment of what I can only assume will be one of the defining projects of the summer: The Camps K&E Newscast.

Very Happy Campers Starting Trips and Tournaments

Our very happy campers are participating in a whole lot of exciting trips and tournaments

Today was a great day for fun, new experiences at Camp. Our Kenwood 1st Year Seniors left on the most challenging mountain hike of their Camp careers. Filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation they left for their expedition up Mt. Washington. By mid-day they had reached the halfway point. Led by Jono, our head of the ropes course, some set up the campsite while others worked on getting dinner prepared. The boys had a beautiful night sleeping on the mountain, and we await a report from the group leader saying that they have reached the summit!

Very Happy Campers | Amazing Special Events

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 7, 2014 4:06:00 AM

Our very happy campers spent today participating in some great special events

We slept late again today and had a nice relaxing morning. Following breakfast the entire campus changed their bed sheets and cleaned their bunks. Then Kenwood had its weekly Watermelon softball league games. Watermelon League is a tradition that dates back to the founding of our camp. Throughout the summer teams with campers of all different ages, led by counselors, play in an intramural league. There’s a little bit of competition and a whole lot of fun, and it’s a great way to help make sure that all of the boys in our community get to know each other well. While our boys were playing softball all of Evergreen was down at the waterfront. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and our girls were thrilled to have a morning to swim, canoe, kayak, fish, and go off of the inflatables in the lake.

Very Happy Campers | The End Of An Amazing First Week

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 6, 2014 2:09:00 AM

We had a whole lot of very happy campers when we woke up this morning. It was the end of an amazing week, and start of another!

The sun was shining bright, and the forecast called for a 0% chance of rain! EVERYONE was in a good mood. There was a lot going on today as we said goodbye to this fabulous first week of the summer. Just as the sun was rising Evergreen had its first Polar Bear Swim of the season, lead by Adventure Dave. Just after the sun rose above Eagle Pond about 20 of our girls and their counselors excitedly lined the docks. As a group they did a round of jumping jacks, and then plunged into the water. They squeeled with utter glee, and then quickly ran to their towels for some warmth. Adventure Dave had a lovely surprise waiting for them at the Evergreen ceremonial campfire area: hot chocolate and warm pastries. Next Friday it will be Kenwood’s chance to take an early and “refreshing” dip into the lake.

Very Happy Campers | Summers Unplugged

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 5, 2014 1:31:00 AM

Camp was without power this morning, and yet we were all very happy campers.

Camp received a whole lot of wind and rain last night, and when we woke up we discovered that the power had gone out. A ways down Eagle Pond Road a tree branch had fallen onto a power line, and while it was being fixed the power company shut us off. As soon as we learned of this Scott turned on our diesel-powered backup generator so that our fabulous kitchen team could make breakfast for the community. As Walshy and I walked through the bunks to wake everyone up (the PA system was also temporarily down) we found large numbers of kids happily sitting on their beds, quietly entertaining themselves. While this is not what we mean by saying that we offer "summers unplugged" it was great to see how easily our kids are able to disconnect themselves from the technological world. As I woke up the campers in Bunk 11 we had a hysterical debate about whether or not the tree that fell onto the power line made a sound, since no one was there to hear it.

Strangely enough, this was the second year in a row that our town lost power on the 4th of July, and many campers are now asking if it can be a tradition. Now THAT'S learning how to adapt!

Very Happy Campers | Teaching Independence and Responsibility

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 4, 2014 2:05:00 AM

Our bunks of very happy campers create unique social contracts to identify the behaviors that are important to them for group living

Being a happy camper doesn't happen by accident. It takes a lot of intentionallyLiving successfully with other people requires compromise, flexibility, and patience. These are life skills that we teach every day at our summer camp in NH. One of the ways that we do this is by asking our campers and staff to work together each summer to create "social contracts". Rather than dictating the rules that we expect them to live by, we asked each cabin to spend an hour or so within their first day at Camp to have a discussion that was guided by their counselors. They talked about the ways that they want to be treated this summer, along with the ways that they don't. They also discussed their individual pet peaves and quirks, so that as a group they could make a good plan for living together. Amongst other things, it's a really good way to help the whole bunk learn about each other and bond.

The counselors also asked their campers to define what it means to be a member of the K&E community. After achieving consensus about the goals of our community, and the rules for the cabin, they wrote everything down on large pieces of poster board that are now hanging in their bunks. At the end of the discussion, to signify everyone’s commitment to trying to live the values of our community, each member of the bunk (including the counselors) signed the document.

Very Happy Campers | Teaching Resilience, Creativity and Adaptability

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 3, 2014 3:03:00 AM

Teaching our very happy campers important lessons about resilience and adaptability

It was already hot when we woke up this morning. By 11am it was well into the 90's and muggy. As always, our campers were total troopers, and more than once I heard someone say "hey, at least it's not snowing!" After the winter we had in the northeast I understand the sentiment. To help with the heat, we placed these cool new misting fans on our ball fields throughout camp. They attach to a hose, and project fine water droplets into the air to help cool down our kids while they take water breaks. As you can imagine, they were a tremendous hit!

Everywhere I went today I saw great activities. Some of our Kenwood seniors were in the music building practicing a Maroon 5 number, complete with a horn section and righteous keyboards. A group of intrepid Kenwood freshmen went on an excursion with Adventure Dave to a nearby lake. After hunting for turtles and frogs they then took turns on a rope swing that enabled them to leap into the refreshing water. Every camper on the trip took a turn!

Very Happy Campers | Summer Camp Rituals

Posted by Jason Sebell on Jul 1, 2014 3:23:00 AM

It's day two of the summer of 2014, and already we have some very happy campers

It's hard to not be a happy camper on a day like today. The weather was perfect -- warm and sunny with beautiful blue skies all day long. Today was our second full day of the summer, and with it came a number of important summer camp rituals. Just after breakfast both camps lined up to take some photos. We took group portraits of both Kenwood and Evergreen, each unit and bunk, and then every individual camper. It was fun to bring everyone together to take some photos that will hang in the dining hall for decades to come.

After picture taking we rolled out to activities. Evergreen campers of all ages took tennis lessons, and for the first time this summer kids were behind the water ski boat. We also had boys and girls slipping down our 27-ft inflatable water slide, and others testing out our other new inflatable called the Rocket
