Helping new campers be independent at overnight camp this summer

Posted by Jason Sebell on Apr 18, 2016 10:00:00 AM

Sometimes I forget how important it is to explain every facet of a situation to children. Recently, my kids made the switch from baths with baby liquid soap to showering with bar soap. When I asked him how he felt about this he remarked "I don't know...it's so dry and sticky. I'm just not sure that it's really doing anything". It turns out he did not figure out on his own that this product needed to be wet in order to function properly. 20+ years as a camp professional and it didn't occur to me that I would need explain to him how soap works. My bad!

In an attempt to avoid these situations during the summer, and because of our overnight camp's focus on teaching children how to thrive independently, we regularly send out information guides to our camp families on just about every aspect of life here at our brother-sister summer camp in NH. Leaving home for the first time, campers have so many important questions, and answering them properly both lessens anxiety and leaves them feeling better prepared for independent living. This is a generation of children who have grown up having information at their fingertips. Because of this, we see it as our responsibility to help make sure that our new campers and new parents have the information necessary to begin the overnight camp adventure!

Whether you have a child joining our summer camp for the first time this summer, or are interested in learning how we share information with our campers to help foster independence, I invite you to check out some of our recent articles.

Great times making camp friends at our new camper parties!

One of the ways that we help our new campers feel great about joining our brother-sister summer camp community is with our new camper parties. Each spring and fall we host gatherings for new campers in the Boston and NY areas. It's a great chance to meet other first time campers, start to build strong connections with our veteran counselors, and start to feel even more connected to our community. We have two new camper parties coming up in the next few weeks. Click below to learn all about them!
