Topics: big weekend
This was quite a 4th week of the summer here at camp. In the midst of some pretty amazing weather we had our annual event called Big Weekend, both camps had their big softball tournaments, there were tons of canoe and mountain climbs, Adventure Dave led some outdoor adventures, the biggest Polar Swims in our history, and tons and tons of great activities! Make sure to check it all out in this week's wrap up video below:
Last night, we did our typical Friday night rituals and traditions. We had our Friday night service, then the whole camp gathered in the tent to watch the weekly wrap up video and two movies made by campers in our film department. Then I surprised the kids by saying that I had one more thing to show...
Just a quick note here: I wrote this on Sunday and thought that I published it. Clearly not!
As I wrote about in yesterday's blog, this weekend our campers and counselors have been happily participating in something we like to call "Big Weekend". Last night we had had one of favorite special events of the entire summer: Rope Burning.
Friday, , just after Services and the showing of the weekly video wrap up, we brought everyone in the community to the tent. The kids weren't quite sure what was going on, though many of the older campers suspected that something was up. And they were right, for it was time for the Big Weekend Breakout.
On this 4th Saturday of the summer our brother-sister summer camps slept in. We like to let our campers and counselors recharge their batteries on the weekend, so everyone slept an hour late.
The End Of An Amazing Special Event For Our Very Happy Campers
Today was another great day of Big Weekend. Just after breakfast the 6 teams had rallies to work on their Songs and Formations. The coaches of each team were asked to write a parody song about their team and the others. Our eldest campers, who live in buildings called Hut 6 and Juniper, had the task of teaching these songs to the rest of their teams. It's part of their learning to be effective leaders in our community. After practicing their songs for a while the campers then began to work on their formations. Each team was tasked with telling a story about their mythological character by using their team members' bodies to form shapes, letters, and even animated characters. Some teams had their campers wear 3 and 4 layers of different colored t-shirts, removing them at strategic times to help tell their story. This was a truly collaborative project, and everyone on the team had the opportunity to give their input.
Another Amazing Special Event For Our Very Happy Campers
On this 4th Saturday of the summer Camp slept. Once reveille blew everyone was quickly out of the bunks, excited for the start of this amazing special event called Big Weekend. I loved seeing the creativity of our counselors, and how hard they work to make an event like this special for our kids. And I also loved how quickly our very happy campers campers threw themselves into this incredible weekend event.
Before breakfast the camp gathered for an assembly where Mia had the teams line up for the first time. Everyone was wearing the individual color t-shirt of their team (thank you to all parents who read this year's packing list and included the array that we had asked for!) and after a quick breakfast they moved out to the first activities of the day.
You may have noticed that I did not post a blog entry for yesterday. Sadly, after finishing a piece last night around 1:30am my beloved laptop let out a loud gasp (literally, it sounded almost human), splashed an array of colors across the screen, and then ceased to function anymore. My new one arrives tomorrow, and I am currently borrowing Scott's. Thankfully, my most recent time machine backup was earlier in the afternoon, so there was no real loss. It was more of an inconvenience...except for the photos and video that I shot yesterday that I wanted to share with you. I hope when my harddrive is fully transferred tomorrow that I am able to recover some of what I wanted to show you. In the meantime I'll try and highlight some of the incredible little moments of the last 48 hours.
