When I'm visiting a future camper in his or her home one of the questions they almost always ask is "do you guys do anything fun for the 4th of July?" After I finish describing what we do to celebrate the holiday most simply respond with one word: Wow. Today was absolutely a "wow" kind of a day.
Every day here has the potential to be amazing. It's overnight camp. But with it being the 4th of July today we took this regular day and made it even more amazing with all sorts of traditions and special events.
Yesterday was the end of an amazing first week at our overnight camp...so today we began the start of our fabulous second week of the summer of 2015! This morning we all slept a little later than usual. Because it was the 4th of July, many campers and counselors came to morning assembly decked out in combinations of red, white and blue. Others wore shirts with American flags on them. Others had elaborate costumes (including a few capes and sunglasses painted to look like American flags). It was great to start of the day in such a festive manner.
Our very happy campers spent today participating in some great special events
We slept late again today and had a nice relaxing morning. Following breakfast the entire campus changed their bed sheets and cleaned their bunks. Then Kenwood had its weekly Watermelon softball league games. Watermelon League is a tradition that dates back to the founding of our camp. Throughout the summer teams with campers of all different ages, led by counselors, play in an intramural league. There’s a little bit of competition and a whole lot of fun, and it’s a great way to help make sure that all of the boys in our community get to know each other well. While our boys were playing softball all of Evergreen was down at the waterfront. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and our girls were thrilled to have a morning to swim, canoe, kayak, fish, and go off of the inflatables in the lake.
