Yesterday I received an incredible email from Tom Shanks, our long-time head of soccer at Evergreen, our summer camp for girls. Tom is studying abroad this semester in Spain, and he could not wait to tell me all about the life lessons he was learning, and how our brother-sister summer camp community continues to be such an important part of his life. Take a look below to read what he wrote:
Today was a great day for playing sports at our brother-sister overnight camp in NH. When we woke up the sun was shining over our lake, and a beautiful fog hovered over it until just after breakfast. By 7:45am there were Evergreen Freshmen getting in some early morning water ski runs before breakfast.
Let’s be real: winning is usually more fun than losing. Our campers participate in a whole lot of traveling team sports tournaments during the summer, and it would be great if they won every single game and match, but that’s not particularly realistic. We often play in tournaments with seven or eight camps, and one can reasonably assume that while we will win some we’ll lose some others.
